A guiding principle of Dr. T. Battefeld's research is reductionism: breaking apart complex systems into its constituents and developing analytical models provides a deep conceptual understanding. This principle allows Dr. T. Battefeld to examine a variety of systems, such as the description of the early Universe by means of mathematical models in String Theory (Quantum Gravitation), or the generation of magnetic fields through primordial plasmas. The reductionist approach allows Dr. T. Battefeld to act as a generalist in disparate research areas.
His scientific ambitions are complemented by his commitment to outreach activities. Dr. Battefeld strives to bridge the gap between the layman and the scientist by volunteering to give public talks at Planetariums, science clubs in schools and university-wide open house events. He also offers summer courses for high school students on contemporary physics. His goal is to replace superstition by critical thinking and understanding of our world.
Dr. T. Battefeld is not avaliable as a consultant .
Education and Work Experience
After completing his undergraduate studies in Physics at the University of Düsseldorf
in 2001, Dr. T. Battefeld attended Brown University
(USA) for his graduate studies. He received his Ph.D in theoretical Physics in 2007. As a student, he was awarded for excellence not only for his research work, but also for his involvement in teaching. The latter led to a Fellowship at the Sheridan Center for Teaching and Learning, where he served as a Teaching Consultant. This position entailed campus-wide events for faculty and students to convey reflective teaching techniques.
After graduation Dr. T. Battefeld worked as a Research Associate at the University of Cambridge (UK) in the Department of Applied Mathematics and Theoretical Physics (DAMTP), at the Department of Physics at Princeton University (USA), where he held a prestigious Teaching Fellowship and at the Institute for Astrophysics at the University of Göttingen, among others. He is currently working at d-fine in the financial sector. In 2015, Dr. T. Battefeld launched an independent Scientific Consulting Firm with his scientific collaborator Dr. D. Battefeld, for which he he is currently acting as a silent partner.
